SharePoint 2010 – Step by Step

Objective 1 –> Install all the pre-requisites on the system that was created in part 2.
Objective 2 –> Install SharePoint 2010 beta 2 binaries.

Notes:

1. This is a public beta and there is no support available. It is to be used only for evaluation purposes
2. Software that needs to be downloaded…
    a. OfficeServer.exe
    b. Products Keys = BV7VC-RMR6B-26P6Y-BTQDG-DX2KQ OR PKXTJ-DCM9D-6MM3V-G86P8-MJ8CY
    c. WCF Hotfix for Windows 2k8 R2 x64

Enable the Roles

    Start Server Manager –> Add the following Roles
    Check Application Server (Click Add Required Features)
    Check Web Server click Next twice

    Check Web Server (IIS) Support–> Click Add Required Role Services when prompted.

    Click Next twice to get a list of Role Services in IIS. Check ASP, WebDAV Publishing. Click Next and then click Install after reviewing.

     Install the hotfix that you downloaded above WCF Hotfix for Windows 2k8 R2 x64
     Start installing SharePoint (OfficeServer.exe)
     Click Install Software Prerequisites. If there is no internet connectivity, download the binaries individually and set it up. This is one reason why I asked you to follow this link to ensure that the guest OS has internet connectivity.
     Great, click Finish
     Now, click Install SharePoint Server
     Use one of the Product Keys mentioned above, and click Continue.
    Choose Standalone (once I get enough RAM to work with, I will share the other version of the installation with a proper SharePoint Farm. For now, this is a beta stuff and all I want to do is to get my hands dirty)

     Installation Progress will be shown. You can’t do much here. Hence, wait
     Installation of the binaries took some time on my machine (around 20 minutes). Leave the checkbox checked, and click close.
     At this time, setup will close and PSConfigUI.exe will start. Click Next.
     You will be prompted, click Yes.
     Configuration will start…
    I was expecting this to finish smoothly, but it wasn’t to happen. I got this error…
     I retried running PSConfigUI (SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard), same error.
System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed.
   Started my search engine, and searched like crazy for quite a few minutes. Tried all sorts of weird recommendations which talk about deleting registry keys, etc. Didn’t follow that, because I seriously don’t know WHY it was asked in the first place. Anyways, to cut the troubleshooting story short, I opened up the Services console, and tried starting "SharePoint Server Search 14” service. It failed, since it was configured for Local Service. I tried Local System, it worked. That sounds interesting, right? So, with the new discovery, I started the configuration wizard again, and when it got stuck at installing search, quickly moved over to the services console, and found that it was changed back to "Local Service”. Great!! So, I knew that this is guy who is creating this nuisance. Just changed it back to Local System, and started the service so that my installation could continue. Success, Yay!!
     Click Finish, and http://sharepoint will open up. You can close this browser window.
     Click Start –> All Programs –> SharePoint 2010 Products –> SharePoint 2010 Central Administration
